According to Goodreads:

Will his kiss be enough to revive her frozen heart?

Once Upon A Time meets La Femme Nikita in GATHERING FROST, a dystopian romance from bestselling author Kaitlyn Davis that reimagines the classic fairy tale of Sleeping Beauty.

Jade was only a little girl when the earthquake struck. Before her eyes, half of New York City disappeared, replaced by a village that seemed torn out of a storybook. Horses and carriages. Cobblestone streets. A towering castle. And, above all, a queen with the magical ability to strip emotions away.

Ten years later and Jade has forgotten what it is to feel, to care...even to love. Working as a member of the queen's guard, she spends most of her time on the city wall staring at the crumbling skyscrapers of old New York. But everything changes when the queen's runaway son, Prince Asher, returns. Jade is tasked with an unusual mission--to let the Prince capture her, to make him trust her, and then to betray his secrets to the crown. In return, she'll earn her freedom. But life outside the queen's realm is more than Jade bargained for. Under Asher's relentless taunts, her blood begins to boil. Under his piercing gaze, her heart begins to flutter. And the more her icy soul begins to thaw, the more Jade comes to question everything she's ever known--and, more importantly, whose side she's really on.

My Opinion:

I received an e-ARC from the publisher in exchange for a review, but in no way does that have an impact on my opinion.

Have you guys ever wondered what it would be like to be brainwashed? I read about brainwashing in stories, and hear about it occasionally on the news during a segment about a  child who had been kidnapped but has now been found. In other areas, we associate brainwashing with aliens and zombies. My question now is...Have you ever heard about heartwashing?

Upon reading the first page we are thrown into the emotionless world of Kardenia. Queen Dierdre, queen of Kardenia, possesses the power to heartwash her inhabitants of her kingdom. Jade, the narrator of the novel, is one of the best members of Queen's guard, The Black Heart. She was raised by the Commander, and looked to him as the father she never had. Jade secretly longed for warmth and love from the Commander, but he was stone cold, incapable of love. Throughout the novel, we watch how she struggles with the hope that maybe some day the Commander's eyes will show a loving emotion (pride, encouragement, compassion...) towards her.

We read how she feels cold throughout her whole body, especially in her heart. When she runs into Prince Asher she begins to thaw. The more time she spends with Prince Asher the more she realizes that she is capable of love and how deadly hope can be. The relationship between Jade and Prince Asher is the perfect fairy tale prince many of us have dreamed of meeting. He is the man who wipes away tears, gentle, protective, and knows when to tease and be serious. Jade falls deeper and deeper for him until she remembers her mission from the queen to let him gain her trust and then betray him.

The emotions throughout the whole novel were raw and beautiful. I found myself flipping through the pages as quick as I could to find out the answers to my questions. Is her mom still alive? Is New York the only area impacted by this strange phenomenon? Will Jade and Prince Asher end up together? Gathering Frost is a great re-telling of Sleeping Beauty that will allow readers to travel back in time to when they first read the classic.

Have you ever been afraid to hope, because of the unknown outcome of an event, situation, or answer? Let me know down in the comments!
